Turning Logs Into Bowl Blanks
This is just a little video of how I prep blanks to be made into bowls later on. My preference is to turn the bowls on the lathe soon after cutting the blanks out of the log, but I didn't have time to do that right then. Instead, I did what I could to ensure I end up with a blank that has as few cracks as possible when I go to use it.
Just so you know, for every person who preps blanks like these, there's a different process. This is just the way I do it.
To prep these blanks, I did two main things. The first was to make sure I cut the pith (center) out of each blank. While I'm at it, I'll also cut a flat on the outside of each blank to make it easier to cut it into a circle on the band s...

Vise Mounting: Quick and Dirty!
Просмотров 3764 года назад
I recently passed my outside vise on to someone else who needed it more than I did. This gave me the opportunity to mount another larger vise outside so I don't have to do any major metal cutting and grinding inside of my woodworking shop. This vise was originally inside my shop and has been my main vise since I've owned it. The mounting is very quick, simple, and functional. I'll probably have...

My First Flint & Steel Fire- Making a Striker and Char Cloth
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.4 года назад
This is my little journey on how I arrived at my first flint and steel fire. I've used other methods to start fires without matches, but I've never used this one. There are dozens of very good videos out there on this very topic, and that's where I learned what I used in this video. The common thread among nearly all those videos was that they had some sort of a charred material to catch a spar...

Rather than using a woodburner, this is what I'll do if the size of the project permits it. I misaligned the "18" and I used the wrong wire for the long legs of the letters. That's what I get for letting the camera take priority over the project, but hey, it was still fun. Hope someone out there learns a little something! Maybe I should just invest in a brand... Was the log used for making this cant hook handle seasoned (dry) or was it green? I will be making one soon.

      The wood was seasoned for several years. My thought is that if it was green, it could shrink and cause the pawl on the end to loosen up. Good luck on your handle!

      Hi Gord! It's what I was taught to do by the "Old Guys" I hang around, so if it's good enough for them, then it's plenty good for me too. I felt like it was especially important for the birch because of its high moisture content, and I know that the moisture difference between the ends and center would be significant if left untreated. I've also never worked with birch before, so I was doing what I could to maximize my success. I have high hopes for them though! Take care! --Mike

    while I like the idea of making your own striker (and I have done so myself) I also believe it is also beneficial to buy a striker from a craftsman who has perfected their craft and makes quality strikers. I also believe in getting knapped flint and most bought strikers come with ready to go flints. BTW you should cover your tins hole with alfoil after you take it out of the fire so as to stop any extra air getting in there just to be certain your char cloth doesn't spontaneously combust.

    • @21mph12
      @21mph12 4 года назад

      Thanks a lot for the advice. I didn't see anywhere that I should cover the hole after removing it from the fire, so I didn't even consider it. I'll be sure to address that in the future. I've also seen a number of strikers made by expert craftsmen, and they are both beautiful and functional. Watching a seasoned blacksmith is a joy as well. It's certainly not outside the realm of possibilities for me to end up with a proper striker some day. I do like to make tools I use when reasonable, and this was one of those things where I had a drawer full of old, worn out files and an entire road loaded with creek rock. It's not the best setup, but it was good enough for me to catch a spark on the first strike with it being the first time I ever tried char cloth. This was all in good fun, and the experience completely lived up to my expectations. Take care! --Mike

      They're out there, but I wouldn't say that they're common. This one was from an old farm. Much of it was buried in the dirt, and the blade was unusable. Luckily, we found another blade at a farm auction. After some work on the rest of the mill, we got it running. It really was a lot of fun though.
